Step 1: Unlock The Duchess First
Before you can even begin to unlock the Revenant, you need to unlock the Duchess. This is a prerequisite. To unlock the Duchess:
- Complete (or attempt) the Tricephalos Expedition: This is the first main expedition in the game, culminating in a fight with the Nightlord, Gladius. You don't necessarily have to defeat Gladius, but you do need to complete a run (even a failed one) where you reach or attempt the fight.
- Obtain the Old Pocketwatch: After completing (or attempting) the Tricephalos Expedition, you'll likely receive the "Old Pocketwatch" relic as a reward. It can sometimes drop even on failed runs.
- Give the Pocketwatch to the Priestess: Return to the Roundtable Hold and speak to the Priestess (the robed NPC near the Relic station). She'll have a new dialogue option about the Old Pocketwatch. Hand it over to her, and a cutscene will play, unlocking the Duchess.
Step 2: Purchase the Besmirched Frame
- Visit the Jar Merchant: Once the Duchess is unlocked, head to the Small Jar Bazaar in the Roundtable Hold.
- Buy the Besmirched Frame: You'll find a new item available for purchase: the "Besmirched Frame." It costs 1,500 Murk. Murk is earned by completing Expeditions, so you might need to do a few more runs if you're short on it.
Step 3: Initiate the Revenant's Challenge
- Find the Ghostly Figure: After purchasing the Besmirched Frame, open your map of the Roundtable Hold. You'll see a new character portrait with an exclamation mark in the east wing (just off the main central room, near the painting).
- Interact with the Phantom: Head to that location and interact with the ghostly projection of the Revenant. You'll be given a choice to "Touch the phantom?" Select "Yes."
Step 4: Defeat the Night Idol (The Revenant Herself)
- Solo Boss Fight: You will be transported back to the tutorial area in Limveld, specifically the arena where you fought Margit the Fell Omen. This time, you'll face the Night Idol, which is the Revenant herself, along with three spectral allies she summons:
- An agile, rapier-wielding Page
- A burly Pumpkin Head with a sledgehammer
- A stationary torso of a giant skeleton
- Strategy for the Fight:
- Focus the Summons First (or kite them): While the ultimate goal is to defeat the Night Idol, her summons can be overwhelming. Many players find success by first eliminating the Page (the fastest and most aggressive) and then the Pumpkin Head. The giant skeleton is slower and can often be avoided or left for last.
- Stay Mobile and Dodge: The Night Idol is quick and uses ranged incantations (like golden discs) that can deal significant damage. Dodge frequently and keep your distance when necessary.
- Patience is Key: Don't rush. Take your time, pick off the summons, and look for openings to attack the Night Idol. She doesn't have a huge health pool once her allies are dealt with.
- Consider Your Character: Play as the character you are most comfortable with and who has a good build for solo encounters. Ranged characters like the Ironeye can be effective for kiting the summons, while agile characters like the Duchess or Executor can help with dodging.
- No Penalty for Failure: If you die, you'll simply be returned to the Roundtable Hold and can try again.
Step 5: Unlock the Revenant
- Once you successfully defeat the Night Idol and her summons, you'll be transported back to the Roundtable Hold. A notification will appear, confirming that you have unlocked the Revenant as a playable character! You can now select her at the character selection altar.
The Revenant is a unique character focused on summoning spirits to aid her in battle, offering a distinct playstyle. Good luck unlocking her!
